I’m really interested in sharing the information on this page which I am a bit passionate about. I’ve found so little on the internet about the paleo diet, gluten-free diet, and celiac disease and how they relate or not. Please read on about this really important subject that is near and dear to my heart (I’m a celiac myself). I’ve done my best to keep things simple so everyone can really understand this.
Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac Disease
The paleo diet is a naturally gluten-free diet because it is a grain-free diet. Now what the heck is gluten? It’s a protein that’s naturally found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye.
Studies show that 1% of the population has celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by the ingestion of gluten. Gluten is not good for us celiacs! It causes the immune system to attack the lining of the digestive tract and inhibits the proper absorption of nutrients from your food.
But did you know that experts are saying that a large proportion of NON-celiac individuals are suffering from gluten intake as well? This is so important for YOU to know about. Even if you don’t have celiac disease, the gluten you eat in grains could be hurting your body! Some researchers estimate that as much as 40% of the population is also sensitive or intolerant to gluten, which can lead to the same symptoms and conditions of celiac disease. These conditions are really underdiagnosed, and I’m really passionate about helping to spread the word about them.
The Paleo Diet and Refractory (Non-Responsive) Celiac Disease
The official treatment for celiac disease is the gluten-free diet. This can help celiac patients heal from the damage caused by gluten and regain their health. But in fact studies are showing that many celiac patients are not fully recovering from going gluten-free!
That’s what happened to me, which you can read more about on my About page. Going totally grain-free on the paleo diet sure did the trick for me, and maybe it might help you too. I even worked in the gluten-free for years and was still having symptoms. It was nuts and made no sense based on the gluten-free diet I was on and was keen on avoiding any cross contamination.
In addition to this, when gluten-sensitive and celiac individuals begin treatment on the gluten-free diet, they tend to turn to unhealthy substitutes for gluten-containing food items such as bread, pasta, and crackers. These foods are processed, low in nutrients, hard to digest, and contain chemical additives. What’s more, many are not even free of gluten! The paleo food list contains an exceptional variety of nutrient-dense foods that can help the body heal itself and do its natural functions.
The Paleo Gluten-Free Diet
If you’re sensitive to gluten or have celiac disease, I highly encourage you to research the subject of paleo and gluten-free thoroughly. You can answer the question, “What is the paleo diet?” by visiting the rest of the pages of my website. Talk to a qualified health practitioner about going paleo. I’m a firm believer in educating yourself to become empowered to make the best choices for YOUR body.
